Closest you can get to a modern RWD Opel.

A modern Opel Diplomat essentially:

-large

-V6 and V8 engines mated to automatic transmissions

-cheaper than the competition

We had a STS as a rental in ‘08 and it was quite impressive for what it was, except for fit and finish issues in the interior.

Why is it that American cars are so popular (relatively) in Germany?

For the same reasons why European cars appeal to Americans. Also because of American culture that is/was very influential. At least that’s how I feel about it. I’d really love to own a 90s American car like an Oldsmobile Aurora¯\_()_/¯

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha, hahaha. They aren’t. There are a bunch of classics and grey imports (usually Mustangs and Ram), but sales of official imports are abysmal. Fucking Lancia outsells most american brands. The only american makes left in germany are Ford (duh), Corvette/Camaro (note how this does not include Chevrolet) and Cadillac. Ford is in kind of a unique position as it has designed and manufactured cars specifically for european markets for well over 80 years and long been established, Corvettes and Camaros are niche products and Cadillac has zero idea on how to penetrate the saturated german executive car market (Wagons? Nope. Diesel? Nope. Aggressive pricing that gives Cadillac a competitive advantage over the established makes? Hell no.)

Well the new car market them is abysmal everywhere in Europe but Germany seems to like the classics more than anyone else.

I guess part of the reason they aren’t as popular here is because of the steering wheel being on the inappropriate side.

Cadillac for example offered the last two generations in rhd I believe. There’s a Top Gear “review” by JC. Isn’t the new Mustang offered in rhd in the UK?

I’ve seen maybe 5 or 6 Cadillac BLS’s over here but they were never popular. You see more Mustangs but that’s only because they are a big showy coupe that people like to use to show off.

I’ve only seen a handful of Cadillacs here. There are some guys daily driving American cars in my town but again, I could count them with my hands.

There’s a single C4 corvette in my town and a guy in the town where I work has a few assorted American cars but that’s it.

That’s dedication to drive a lhd car in a rhd country.

A friend of mine has a LHD Miata (actually a Miata in this case because it was a US import) and he copes fine, it’s just difficult on country roads to overtake. I drove it a few times and I didn’t have any major issues. The Miata is now in a barn waiting for him to come back from the US, where he is driving a RHD Ford Puma.

The first few Miatas here in Germany were US imports before they started importing them officially. A couple in my neighborhood has one of those early ones. I couldn’t imagine driving on the right side tbh even if it’s not that bad probably. As for the Puma in the US, that’s badass of him. I’ve seen a few cars with American plates here in Germany.

He bought it for £150 so he could temporarily import it to the US and get rid of it when the time is up. So when it’s been there for a year he can either sell it to a Canadian because the laws are different or it gets crushed.

I wouldn’t want to risk getting it seized by the feds and getting a fine though.
